tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  November 27, 2012 5:00am-6:00am PST

5:00 am
well, patches of it, even in the south bay. we'll detail your traffic commute and get you all up to speed. it is 5:00 on the dot. this is "today in the bay." good morning, everybody. i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we do have an update on that breaking news in milpitas this morning. >> police activity forcing the closure of a popular intersection that could make that morning commute a slow go there. this is going on right now happening on jacklin road and arizona avenue right by milpitas high school. that's where bob redell is live with what chp officers are now saying about all that's going on out there. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon and laura. we know chp received a bolo, a be on the lookout bulletin from milpitas police who's handling this investigation that they are looking for someone connected to this shooting that took place just before 2:00 this morning actually here at the intersection of jacklin road and
5:01 am
escuela parkway. you can see police along with the fire department have converged and they're investigating that area that is right now being shown by that bright light. we were able to see earlier with our zoom lens what looked like bullet casings, three or four of them. it was our understanding there was an officer involved in this shooting that took place between an officer and a suspect. what led up to this shooting, what were the circumstances surrounding the shooting, that's not clear. we are waiting for a public information officer with milpitas police to come out here. they should be here within the next 15 minutes. we have no reason to believe that an officer was hurt. as far as the condition of the suspect, not clear either. but we do know this person was able to escape, hence the reason why there's the be on the lookout bulletin for this suspect. jacklin road is shut down several blocks. to the left of the tv screen which is campbell and all the way down to the right which is

arizona. it's going to be quite some time before they reopen it, we suspect, based on just a short conversation we had with the police. it could be a few hours and definitely affecting the morning commute to your job.ilpitas to if you have students trying to get to milpitas high, you'll have to find a detour around these three major intersections. reporting live here in milpitas, bob redell, "today in the bay." now to our other top story of the morning, a live look at san francisco. fog getting thicker this morning but that's nothing compared to what is in store. a heavy round of rain moving into the bay area just 24 hours from now. we have team coverage this morning. monte francis is live in the north bay where some neighborhoods are already putting out sandbag, but we begin in the weather center with meteorologist christina loren. what are we looking at here? >> well, you know what, when we get a lot of rain, it's one
5:03 am
thing, laura an jon. but when you get a lot of rain in combination with very strong winds, that's a very dangerous recipe here in the bay area. as you know, we have a lot of very tall redwood trees and we are expecting downed trees the next few days because there's 3 to 4 inches of rain on the way and gusts about 60 miles per hour from time to time. so it's going to get very active around here. as you can see around here fog is a factor this morning but i did want to talk about your winds. winds are not playing as much of a role as they were yesterday, so calm winds, when you have very still conditions that creates that very thick fog. now, this morning the winds are picking up a little bit as that system moves in and that's going to prevent the fog from getting as thick as it was yesterday. nonetheless, there are some deep pockets out there so travel cautiously. now, what we're expecting from this series of storms, the first one will move through as we head throughout tomorrow. that's going to bring heavy rain and wind for your morning commute. storm number two arrives as we head through thursday. that's going to bring more heavy
5:04 am
rain and wind. what i can tell you right now is wednesday and friday are looking the worst. then we also have another storm system on the way that's going to provide intermittent showers saturday into sunday. so the moral of the story, seize the day. get out there to take care of anything that you wanted to do outdoors without having to dodge those showers. 64 inland, bayside 62 and at the coast 62. still cool and cloudy for today. we're going to hold off on the heavy rain until tomorrow morning. first, we want to take a look at your drive -- actually i'll send it back to you guys right now. >> the north bay will likely be the hardest hit. some areas could see as much as four inches of rain, maybe more, and that is prompting flood concerns this morning and some residents already getting ready before the first raindrops starting falling. monte francis is live where sandbags are already being handed out. monte, good morning. >> reporter: well, jon, good morning. they are always ready for a big storm because there is a creek that runs through the middle of
5:05 am
town. the city has made sandbags available free of charge. there's a big pile of sand so residents can come here, fill up the bags in preparation for the storm expected to start tomorrow. the last time there was a problem with flooding here was in 2008. but the real devastating flood was december of 2005 when the creek flooded the downtown streets and many local businesses were under water. the reason the next storm is a concern is because in the north bay they're expecting 4 inches of rain and those are exactly the kinds of conditions that can spell trouble. the city is doing what they can. storm drains have been cleared and crews are ready to keep them clear. downtown businesses don't have the sandbags out just yet but we are expecting people to come by and fill up these sandbags. new this morning, all access on and off treasure island is
5:06 am
blocked right now due to a police standoff going on between officers and an armed suspect. san francisco pd has a suspected armed car thief cornered, but he's threatened to kill himself. the standoff began following a police chase. right now officers are not letting anyone on and off the island. they are even telling the media to stay off the island. we're keeping an eye on the situation and will bring you updates as they develop. >> police in gilmore looking for a pair of suspects wanted for a strong-armed liqu eed robbery. cash was taken from the register along with several packs of cigarettes. investigators say one of the suspects threatened to shoot the clerk before punching him right in the face. the suspects were last seen driving off in an older model dark-colored four-door car. parents and teachers at a san francisco middle school right now calling for an investigation into the school's

principal. the parents there claiming that principal at martin luther king middle school physically abused students. now, this afternoon they'll formally ask the district attorney to investigate all these allegations. in the past a spokeswoman for the school district has denied any wrongdoing by the principal. an oakland teenager charged with the murder of a toddler during a shootout in the parking lot says he didn't do it. 17-year-old frederick coleman pleaded not guilty in court this week. he's accused of killing 2-year-old hiram lawrence jr. who was with his father in a crowded west oakland parking lot when the gunfire started. little hiram was shot in the head and he died less than two weeks later. coleman has been charged as an adult. two other men are facing federal charges. in the meantime a judge in solano county will determine whether the man charged with shooting and killing a vallejo police officer will stand trial. henry albert smith is accused of killing the officer during a

5:09 am
5:09 right now. meteorologist christina loren has been very busy this morning bracing us all for a lot of rain and fog that's going to be there. a busy week ahead. >> this could be one of the more significant weeks when we tally everything up at the end of the year because it's looking that potent. let me tell you a little about what's to come. we've got maybe 4 inches of rain, wind gusts in excess of 50 miles per hour but not just yet. what you need to know for today is thick follow developing, not as thick as yesterday, not as widespread. nonetheless give yourself extra time and travel cautiously because you will find very thick patches from time to time, especially along the peninsula and up in the north bay. as we head through this afternoon, we'll get a little sunshine for the first part of the day and the clouds thicken up as we get into this afternoon and evening ahead of a series of storms. prolonged wet and windy pattern that lasts well into next week. then we've got another round potentially wednesday into thursday. i'm looking 15 days out. 64 in livermore, 64 in fremont and 63 in san jose.
5:10 am
you'll need the jacket today and you probably want to bring that umbrella with you if you're waking up with us in the north bay. south bay leave the umbrella at home. we're going to time the system out to your doorstep coming up. we gave mike the day off. no fear, though, we've got it covered. anthony slaughter, good morning to you. >> good morning, christina. as you've been telling us the fog is out there and you can see it from our traffic cam. you can see the visibility right around the lights just a little bit of a haze there, but nothing too bad at least right now in the south bay. we get you over towards -- where else do we have? 101/280 in the south bay as well. you can see traffic is moving right along. no incidents there. you can also see on the maps where earlier we were hearing about the street shutdown over near milpitas. this is right at jacklin and escuela. just keep in mind the streets are still closed in that specific location. back to you.
5:11 am
5:11. coming up, privacy on parade. how thousands of social security and license plate numbers ended up flying down 34th street during the thanksgiving day parade. >> not the kind of ticker tape you want, right? >> reporter: and breast cancer rates are higher than average in certain parts of the bay area and i'm not just talking about marin county. good morning, i'm marla day wez what a new study shows coming up. two stocks doing very well, facebook and yahoo!. we'll take a look coming up in business news.
5:12 am
5:13 am
welcome back, everyone. it is 5:14. a new study is shedding light on breast cancer rates in the bay area and the results are alarming. the study shows more and more cases are popping up in many counties, in particular the south bay, santa clara county.
5:14 am
marla tellez is in our newsroom with a look. good morning. >> reporter: laura, good morning. historically we know that marin county has higher breast cancer rates, but this new study finds marin county isn't alone. the latest research called the california breast cancer mapping project found, and we do have a map to show you, communities in san mateo county, northern santa clara county and southern alameda county had breast cancer rates that were 10 to 20% higher than the state average from 2000 to 2008. high rates were also found in portions of sonoma, napa and solano counties. unfortunately, the study does not pinpoint the cause behind these higher rates but here's some food for thought. well-known risk factors are taking certain hormone replacement. having no children or few children later in life. also drinking two or more alcoholic beverage ace day. this tends to be common among higher income women, which the bay area does have. still the study does not say
5:15 am
this is the cause of the higher breast cancer rates that the study found. other risk factors are thought to be environmental, also genetic. more reasons for women to practice good breast care and that includes staying current on those mammograms. one last note is the california research breast cancer program funded the study and that is based in oakland, so another local tie. here's a question, should yahoo!'s marissa mayer be "time" magazine's next person of the year. yahoo! shareholders might think so. >> mayer a serious candidate for the cover of this year's "time" magazine person of the year. you can vote for her online if you wish. mayer has been ceo at yahoo! for about four months now. yesterday yahoo! stock crossed $19 a share for the first time since 2010. there's really nothing specific driving that stock other than an overall confidence that mayer's leadership is worth a few
5:16 am
dollars more to the overall share price. the other stock to watch is facebook. take a look at that, gaining 8% monday after a leading analyst upgraded that stock. now, in an unrelated matter, facebook will reportedly consider revoking its system where facebook users get to vote yes or no on changes to its privacy policy. facebook has an unusual system where even the decision to revoke the vote is put up for a vote by users. well, shall we check with cnbc? i vote yes. let's turn to bertha booms live at cnbc world headquarters. it was unanimous. good morning. >> reporter: thank you, thank you, i really appreciate it. good morning, scott. the white house says president obama called house speaker john boehner and senate majority leader harry reid over the effort to discuss efforts to avoid the fiscal cliff. that's the combination of tax hikes and spending cuts set to take effect january 1st. the "washington post" reports that boehner plans to have some
5:17 am
house republicans meet wither skin bowles. on wednesday president obama will meet with other top ceos. futures meantime are flat this morning, stocks slipping back on monday. the s&p 500 index snapping a five-day winning streak. investors continue to watch those budget talks in washington. meantime, we are expecting today to get some data on demand for durable goods, home prices and consumer confidence. the dow slipping back below 13k losing 42 points to 12,967. the nasdaq edging up nearly 10 to 2976. and i would do a campaign not to vote for marissa mayer for "time" person of the year. remember when we had the head of amazon on the cover of "time" back in 2000. i think there's a little jinx in that. a little like the si jinx. so don't vote for her. >> fair enough. no on mayer, that's our
5:18 am
position. bertha koomcoombs, thank you mu remember we were talking about that new nintendo wii gaming system last week. they temporarily sold out of them after the first week. it doesn't have a whole lot of competition. there's no new playstation or xbox out so it's the only thing out there really. >> it's the hot thing right now. >> it's not bad. >> thank you very much. 5:18 right now. what's hot in our department, our weather department is all this rain coming. christina loren here to tell us all about it. you're working hard over there. >> by this time tomorrow it will be too late. but i'm warning you run for the hills. no, we're looking good. maybe you've been promising your dog a nice, long walk. well, you're not going to be able to do it tomorrow as easily as you'll be able to today. so keep that in mind. try to burn off some of that turkey and stuffing. today's your day to do so. right now a quarter of a mile visibility in napa but every
5:19 am
where else more than a mile. that is significant improvement but you'll probably still encounter deep pockets of fog and the fog will get worse before it gets better, this morning especially through the north bay interior valleys. that's where we're expecting it to be the thickest and we are expecting low ceilings to force flight delays out of sfo. a series of storms headed toward the bay area. the jetstream has taken a significant dip and the jetstream is like a conveyor belt that carries the storm systems from west to east across the united states. as long as it stays to the south of us, that's just going to keep that window open and storm after storm coming to the bay area as we head throughout the week. so we're talking about the potential for three-quarters of an inch to 3 inches just between tomorrow and sunday. we'll see gusty winds sustained at 15 to 30 miles an hour gusting higher to 50, 60 miles per hour from time to time so downed trees are a concern the next couple of days. let's talk about your futurecast. we'll get a little moisture this
5:20 am
morning, especially on the peninsula right at the immediate coast. san francisco all the way down to palo alto, fair game for showers between 9:00 and 10:00 today. that's prefrontal precipitation. we're going to stay mostly dry, mostly cloudy for today. look at what arrives. we meet back here at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. heavy rain starting to move on the peninsula. we'll get that heavy rain between 5:00 and 11:00 and showers will start to let up a little bit. you might be able to get outdoors from time to time on thursday before our next system rolls through. it's the friday system that concerns me the most. that starts to arrive as we head through the overnight hours on thursday into early friday. and this is going to come at a time when we already have very wet ground, likely have puddles ponding at that point. our ground will be very, very easy to take trees down so we want to keep that in mind. travel cautiously, especially if you live up in the mountains. stay tuned to the weather forecast. seven-day forecast looks like this. look at that rain all the way across the board. starting to dry out the second
5:21 am
half of your monday. now, it's a little foggy out there. let's check on your drive with our very own anthony slaughter. >> 880 down towards 280 you can notice there's where we're seeing the slowdowns in the south bay. let's show you what it looks like on our camera perspective and you can see not too bad as far as the congestion goes on the roadways but slower traffic just because of those patches of fog. again, this is 280 and 17. let's hop over to fremont. this is 880. you can see traffic is moving right along into the northbound areas. the lights facing us is the northbound direction. also on the peninsula and palo alto, you can see traffic is moving right along. so no issues this morning. keeping our fingers crossed here in the traffic department. you guys treat me so good here. back to you guys. >> thank you very much. it's 5:22. investigators are trying to figure out how shreds of sensitive documents ended up being tossed as confetti during the recent macy's thanksgiving day parade.
5:22 am
spectators in new york city last thursday noticed some of the confetti included social security and license plate numbers. some even found notes about mitt romney's police motorcade when he visited new york last month. the debris appears to have originated from the police department in long island. >> somebody is going to get in trouble on that one. 5:22 right now. here's a question. does brian wilson have a future with the giants? a contract showdown that has many fans fearing the beard may leave san francisco.
5:23 am
5:24 am
brian wilson had to miss the entire world series run and now people are wondering will he stay or will he go? this morning rumors swirling around the giants pitcher and his future with the ball club. wilson and the team at this point can't agree on a contract for next year.
5:25 am
the team wants to cut his pay after he missed the 2012 season to have his second elbow surgery. now, there are some questions about the exact health of his arm, but wilson says he's ready to go and he'll be ready to pitch next season. if there's no contract offer on the table by friday, wilson does become a free agent, meaning the giants could still make an offer later on but then would have to compete with other teams for his service. >> will the closer close the door. we will find out. well, the beard better have an umbrella come tomorrow. we want to check your forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you. what a sad, sad state of affairs. come on now, bochy, i'm talking to you, let's keep wilson. we're looking good out there this morning. temperatures are going to be mild for today, a little bit on the cool side. you'll need the jacket. you probably won't need the umbrella until tomorrow if you're waking up with us south of the golden gate bridge. we do have quite a bit of rainfall on the way starting tomorrow. when we meet back here it is going to be dicey already. so enjoy the day while it
5:26 am
remains dry. 64 inland, bayside 62, 62 at the coast. let's check on your drive, anthony slaughter in the house. >> we've been telling you all about the fog and even showing you patches of it on our skycam right here. you can't see much of it, this is at the bay bridge toll plaza. it does seem as if the fog is not as widespread as yesterday. so if you recall leaving for work yesterday might have been a little bit more tough. the only trouble spots we still have are in the north bay crossing over 80 and 101 as you get into vallejo and san rafael. guys, back to you. it's 5:26. still to come on "today in the bay" an update on that breaking news in milpitas as police search for a gunman who opened fire on officers. also a teenage suspect in a deadly crime spree in san jose will soon be facing formal charged. the role he's accused of playing in that crime.
5:27 am
5:28 am
it is 5:29. good morning, everybody.
5:29 am
thank you for joining us. i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we are following breaking news happening in the south bay. bob redell is live near the scene on jacklin road and escuela parkway with new details for us. bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. milpitas police have been out here the past few hours. this was a shooting involving a suspect and possibly a police officer taking place just before 2:00 this morning. we're still waiting for the public information officer with the millipepitas police to come and tell us more about what happened, especially the circumstances. we were able to see bullet casings on the road there. you're looking at jacklin road. that's the cross street going left to right on your tv screen. there are three or four bullet casings so we know that's at least how many shots were fired. where those shots came from, were they from the officer's gun, were they from the suspect's gun, that part is not clear.
5:30 am
we do know talking to chp that they did receive an all-points bulletin looking for a suspect related to what happened here this morning, but there's no information as far as who this person is. clearly that person did get away and we do not believe that the officer, whoever that person was, was hurt when that happened. so what they have done right now is they have shut down -- milpitas police have shut down jacklin road between campbell to escuela and further to the right to arizona so several blocks are still shut down here. and based on the activity we're seeing out here, there's more resources coming out, more officers and just based on a quick conversation we've had with one of these officers, it sounds like they're going to be out here quite some time. this is, in other words, something that could affect your morning commute if you have business to and from milpitas or if your kids go to milpitas high. as far as traffic is concerned, milpitas high and some of the other schools are not too far from here, so if you're trying
5:31 am
to get your kids to school today, you may have to find a detour and allow a few extra moments. right now to the weather and the storm that has its sights set on the bay area. we have a live look from san francisco, that is the embarcadero up there. you can notice some fog out there right now. tomorrow morning it will be range and it will not stop until next week. our team coverage begins with monte francis live with some precautions that some local cities are taking out there, good morning. >> reporter: well, jon, good morning. there is a creek that runs through the middle of san anselmo and it is snoknown to fd and that is why people are so concerned. the city is making sandbags available and sand available so residents can prepare. the last time there was a problem with flooding here was in 2008, but the real devastating flood was in december of 2005 when the san anselmo creek flooded the streets of downtown san anselmo and many local businesses were under water.
5:32 am
the reason this next storm is a concern here in the north bay because they're expecting 4 inches of rain during a matter of several days and those are exactly the kinds of conditions that spell trouble for san anselmo. the town is doing what they can to prepare. storm drains have been cleared and city crews are ready to keep them clear once the rain starts tomorrow. downtown businesses do not have the sandbags out just yet but we do expect that to change later today. so when should this rain start? let's check in with christina loren. >> great job out there this morning, great advice as we are expecting localized flooding. what happens is we're going to get so much rain so quickly, our roads are not equipped to take it. so let's time it out for you a little bit and show you what's to come as we meet back here tomorrow morning. we set your futurecast in motion and stop it at 5:00. look at that heavy band in moisture in time to slam your morning commute. you want to keep in mind tomorrow is going to be a rough drive and this morning we also have patchy fog that could slow
5:33 am
you down. we have a series of storms on the way. heavy rain 4:00 to 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. spotty showers will continue from noon to 4:00 p.m. with isolated thunderstorms embedded within the rain. then as we head throughout the second half of your wednesday, it will be cool and cloudy. we've got more rain on the way on thursday. friday looks really rough and then saturday into sunday the tail end of a third system swings through. so we'll be back with your local forecast today coming up and we'll time the system out to your doorstep in just a few moments. it is 5:33. today the san jose city council will address a controversial proposal that would allow biologists to shoot birds at mineta san jose airport. since 2009 the airport has had 180 bird strikes. the most serious incident happened in january of that year when a united airlines plane ingested birds in its engines during takeoff. airport management says seagulls and other birds like the open
5:34 am
grassy space near the runways. for now, they're not allowed to shoot blanks or ammunition to shoo those birds away because the city municipal code forbids it. they're hoping the city council will amend the code and allow trained operation staff and contracted biologist to use firearms. >> the flash bangs or whatever they do, that is the real key. and you have to shoot a couple of them down. i know people don't like to hear that. that's okay, maybe they'll get the message. >> if approved, biologists would have to undergo training before they're cleared to shoot. it is 5:34 right now. the 15-year-old suspect linked to a san jose crime spree could be arraigned as early as today. authorities caught the san jose teen in concord on friday after a week on the run. the suspect is linked to last week's killing of a young man during a carjacking in a 7-eleven parking lot and the attempted killing of a police officer. that suspect's name right now not being released because of his age. no word yet on whether he will
5:35 am
be tried as an adult. now, the other suspect in custody, 26-year-old jonathan wilbanks, he's in jail facing multiple charges with special circumstances. 5:35. who should lead the troubled city once considered among the safest in the nation? san jose is looking for a new police chief at a time when crime is up and morale is down. last night hundreds attended a neighborhood meeting to let the department know what they'd like in a new chief. as we first reported yesterday morning there are at least two potential candidates to replace chief chris moore. one is the chief from fresno, jerry dyer, another sacramento chief rick braziel. the last four police chiefs have come from within the department. chief chris moore plans to leave by the end of january. another public meeting is scheduled for wednesday. in the meantime the san leandro city manager is putting his money where his mouth is by using his paycheck to keep his team in place. he will take a $20,000 pay cut
5:36 am
so the assistant city managerially ann marshall and the police chief can each get $10,000 a year raises. he hopes his contribution will entice his people to stay put. he says in tough financial times, he believes in leading by example. the time now is 5:36. and even by bay area standards, we expect a lot of rain during this time of year. christina loren says this is getting a little wild out there. >> it really is. you know what else is going to be a big factor, all the leaves falling off the trees clogging up storm drains. make sure to get your storm drains cleared today if you can while it's still dry out there as we are expecting localized flooding. we'll take you to that forecast coming up in just a few minutes. we want to start with your visibility this morning. a lot of improvement here but we're still dealing with thick pockets of fog up in napa. everybody above a quarter of a mile. the winds are picking up a little bit, stirring up our
5:37 am
atmosphere, keeping that fog from settling right to the surface. the winds will continue to increase throughout the day. 64 degrees at 4:00 p.m. inland, 62 bayside and rather a cool day at the coast. you'll need that jacket. also probably want to bring an umbrella because we are expecting some drizzle, areas north of the golden gate bridge all the way throughout the day today with that weather system coming onshore. so we'll time it out to your doorstep. your seven-day outlook reveals quite a few days with rain in the forecast. that's coming up. 5:37. let's get you to work on time. anthony is here to help you out. >> we are still talking about that fog this morning, not too bad in the south bay as we are watching pockets of it develop. you can see this is 101 heading into san jose. lots of headlights on there. just make sure you double check those headlights before you head out, that will be a key factor, especially once you hit one of those pockets of fog. let's take you to the east bay. this is 880 at fremont. you'll notice the congestion still picking up. let's get you to the traffic maps so you can see in the south
5:38 am
bay lots of green. earlier you were hearing a closure in milpitas and you can see some of the streets surrounding that area are starting to slow. this is at jacklin and escuela where the streets are closed. you'll notice some yellows and reds indicating traffic is starting to pick up in that lotion. if you live in milpitas, leave with a little extra time for your commute this morning. 5:38 right now. coming up, the u.n. ambassador in the hot seat in washington today. we'll let you know the questions she'll be answering from lawmakers coming up next in a live report. >> reporter: also a new study finds breast cancer rates are not looking good in certain bay area counties. we'll take a look coming up.
5:39 am
5:40 am
good tuesday morning to you. taking a live look outside, a dry san jose and south bay. things are going to be changing when it comes to that forecast. enjoy today. rain is coming tomorrow. we've got the forecast coming up
5:41 am

5:42 am
she has said, susan rice has said she was working from talking points provided by the intelligence community. that's one of the reasons you'll see the acting cia director along with her today. will that satisfy mccain and these other critics? lindsey graham and senator kelly ayotte. she has said not only does she want sufficient explanation, she wants to see documentation as well. she's working from memos and talking points from the intelligence community, let's see them. we'll see what happens after this meeting today. laura. >> we will. thank you very much. it is 5:42. republicans on capitol hill may be willing to back off an old pledge not to raise taxes to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. some prominent republican senators, who were dead set against tax hikes, may consider other alternatives. gop senator bob corker has a ten-year, $4.5 billion proposal that hits the wealthiest, but it also curbs social security and medicare benefits.

so far he's not garnered any democratic support. >> you don't raise rates, you just cap the amount of itemized deductions that taxpayers -- it hits the wealthy. >> there's going to come a point in time where we can't borrow any more money and interest rates are going to skyrocket. >> this congress is one vote away from avoiding the fiscal cliff. >> if a budget deal is not reached by the end of the year, automatic spending cuts and tax hikes will kick in. here is a very interesting study. new this morning, bay area breast cancer rates are on the rise. that according to a new study released overnight. as the research shows, the numbers are causing some concern in certain areas. marla tellez is in our newsroom with all the new findings. >> reporter: jon, good morning. 10% to 20%. those are the numbers that are causing concern when it comes to breast cancer rates in the bay area. specifically the california breast cancer mapping project found portions of san mateo, santa clara and alameda counties had breast cancer rates that were 10% to 20% higher than the
5:44 am
state average from 2000 to 2008. high rates were also found in the north bay in portions of sonoma, napa and solano counties. however, the study does not name a cause for these higher rates. but it has long been known breast cancer risk factors include taking certain hormone replacements, having no children or few children later in life, also drinking two or more alcoholic drinks a day. this behavior tends to be common among higher income women, which of course the bay area does have. still, this is just some food for thought. the study does not say this correlation is in fact the cause of the higher breast cancer rates. it is also worth mentioning these higher than average rates were found in portions of southern california as well, including ventura and los angeles counties. the study was funded by the california breast cancer research program, which is based in oakland. laura. >> thank you very much, marla. it's 5:45. some cancer patients call it chemo brain and this morning
5:45 am
we're learning more about what causes it. doctors have discovered physical evidence that chemotherapy causes changes in the brain affecting a patient's concentration and memory. after studying more than 100 patients, researchers found that although there was little difference in brain volume, there were significant changes in brain metabolism in areas linked to planning and prioritizing. also concerning your health, grapefruit and certain drugs just don't mix. this can be a very dangerous combination and a lot of doctors may be unaware of the risks. canadian researchers say there are now 85 drugs that may interact with grapefruit and half can have serious side effects or even cause sudden death. grapefruit contains a chemical that can either accelerate the effects of certain drugs or block the absorption of others, even when eaten many hours before taking the medication. time now to check in with meteorologist christina loren for a look at our forecast today. how's our visibility out there?
5:46 am
we talked about a lot of fog yet. >> yeah, we've got some fog out there, but it is not as bad as it was yesterday but it's still creating some difficulties for commuters this morning. also we are expecting some low ceilings out of sfo. as you know, it doesn't take much to force flight delays out there so we'll keep our eye on that as well. those usually come in about 6:15. we've got about two and a half miles of visibility in livermore, five miles in san mateo and san jose. we're actually improving up in napa where we started out with a quarter of a mile visibility. now you are at one full mile. so winds still coming out of the east-southeast in places like san jose. they are stronger this morning than they were at this time yesterday. as a result we're seeing a little bit less fog right at the surface, but still want to give yourself time and travel cautiously. we don't want any unnecessary accidents. so storm number one arrives as we make up tomorrow morning. 4:00 a.m. to 10:00, strongest wind arrives late morning. we are going to see very gusty winds. that is the major component. first storm. spotty showers noon to 4:00 p.m.

you might get outdoors parts of tomorrow evening and the winds will drop off as well. this is what we're talking about in terms of wind. we stop the clock on your futurecast about 11:00 a.m. all wait to 5:00 p.m. tomorrow, it is going to be very blustery around here. you see all that pink coming in, those are wind gusts in excess of 40, 50 miles per hour so we are expecting that saturated ground to make it easy for trees to go down with these stronger gusts. that could cause some delays for your commute if you're waking up with us in the mountains. we'll keep an eye on that as up in the higher elevations you get those very strong winds. as we head through wednesday and thursday, more rain on the way. friday looks really bad during the day but we'll get a little bit of a break friday into saturday. tail ending of another system comes through saturday and sunday and that keeps showers in the mix all the way through the first part of monday but we should start to dry out monday night. get two dry days before yet another storm system moves into the bay area. you want to make sure you're

its handling and purchase of british-based autonomy for $11 billion. last week hp said at least $8 billion of that was wasted after it discovered autonomy was not worth the price. the shareholder wants damages from hp because of the money lost because the share price fell. the irony, jon and laura, is that he would be getting damages from a company he in fact owns through his shares. and if the damages were big enough, his shares would be worthless because of the damages paid to him and that would get even worse if the suit were granted class action status. so he's really kind of suing himself but at least he's showing his difficulties pleasure at what hp did. 5:55 right now. christina loren is back to tell us about what's happening and she's saying brace yourself for a lot of things. >> yeah, just wait till i show you how much rain we're expecting. first i want to start with your fog because it's a factor this morning. give yourself a little extra time. although we are above one mile of visibility everywhere across the board, for now you might
